Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in San Fernando Valley

If you’re trying to choose between a residential treatment program and a partial hospitalization program (PHP), it’s important to know the similarities and differences between the two types of care.

Selecting the right level of treatment ensures your individual needs will be met, giving you the best chances for long-term recovery.

A partial hospitalization program is a higher level of care compared to traditional outpatient services. Most of your work will be conducted during the day. Some of the main components of PHP are individual therapy, group counseling, medication management and education.

Shadow Hills Recovery can determine if PHP is right for you. We recommend this program to individuals who need to focus on their sobriety without dealing with outside triggers.

What is Partial Hospitalization?

Addiction treatment is a spectrum and not a one-and-done event. A partial hospitalization program is on this spectrum. It can serve as an effective starting point for your recovery, as well as a ‘step down’ from a residential treatment program.

Partial hospitalization programs offer part-time treatment where you will not live at the facility, though you may be encouraged to reside at a sober living community. You’ll travel back and forth for treatment, and treatment hours are similar to a part-time job at 25-30 hours a week.

In other words, the commitment is comparable to a residential treatment program, though you get to choose your own living accommodations. During your time in treatment, you’ll receive medical and psychiatric care, as well as have access to alternative therapies like acupuncture, breathwork, art therapy and rock (music) therapy.

Is Partial Hospitalization Right for You?

PHP is a great fit for people who have completed detox and are mentally and physically stable. You’ll have greater access to counselors and medical staff who can monitor your condition while transitioning into your everyday life.

Shadow Hills Recovery recommends PHP for individuals who have a higher chance for relapse and difficulty managing their triggers. You will also need a strong support system at home because you will be going home at night. If you don’t, you’ll need to make arrangements for a sober living house.

What is Included in PHP Treatment?

Depending on your needs, here are some of the services included in PHP treatment:

  • Group therapy. The foundation of PHP is group therapy. It provides a safe and structured environment for you to share your feelings and learn from others who are going through similar experiences.
  • Individual therapy. It’s also important to have one-on-one time with a therapist. During these sessions, you can share issues that you may not want to bring up in a group session, as well as discuss setbacks, achievements and more.
  • Family sessions. Substance use disorders affect more than the individual – they affect the family unit, too. Family therapy is a good opportunity to heal from past trauma and teach families how to support their loved one going forward.
  • Medication management. You may need certain prescription medications to treat a mental health or behavioral health disorder. These can be safely administered during your treatment hours.
If you believe that PHP may be the right fit for you or a loved one, get in touch with the admissions team at Shadow Hills Recovery. We’ll do an initial evaluation to determine what level of care is appropriate.
